Strengths are recorded as null because they differ by product and country; each generic follows the doses of the brand it copies (Ozempic, Wegovy or Rybelsus).
India: the semaglutide compound patent expired on 20 March 2026 and generic injections launched from 21 March 2026, from companies including Dr. Reddy's, Zydus, Sun Pharma, Alkem, Glenmark, Mankind and Torrent. Novo Nordisk cut Ozempic and Wegovy prices in India soon after.
India, oral generics: Torrent launched generic oral semaglutide on 21 March 2026 and Dr. Reddy's launched 3, 7 and 14 mg tablets in May 2026. Novo Nordisk is suing both over formulation patents covering the SNAC absorption enhancer, which run to about 2031.
Canada: Novo Nordisk's Canadian patent lapsed after a maintenance fee was not paid. Health Canada approved Dr. Reddy's generic (Ozempic reference, type 2 diabetes) on 28 April 2026, the first in the G7, then Apotex on 1 May 2026, Apotex's Sevmia (Wegovy reference, weight management) on 29 June 2026 and Sandoz on 18 September 2026.
Canada, quality: Health Canada published two recalls of Dr. Reddy's semaglutide injection in August 2026 (a pen packaged with the wrong strength, and an out-of-specification impurity).
Brazil: ANVISA approved the first generic semaglutide (EMS) and a similar product from Germed in August 2026. Whether these are on sale yet was not verified.
US, EU and UK: no generic semaglutide is approved. Novo Nordisk lists compound patent expiry as 2031 in Europe and 2032 in the US; the key US compound patent listed by the FDA expires 5 December 2031.
Compounded semaglutide sold in the US is not an FDA-approved generic, and products sold online as 'research use only' are not medicines. Regulators warn against buying these.

UK United Kingdom	Not approved	No generic semaglutide is authorised or sold in the UK; the eMC lists only Novo Nordisk's semaglutide products (Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy). Unlicensed or 'research' semaglutide sold online is illegal and unsafe.
CA Canada	Availableas Semaglutide Injection (Dr. Reddy's), Apo-Semaglutide and Sevmia (Apotex)	Injections only. The EMA's September 2026 list shows three generic semaglutide applications under evaluation (two for type 2 diabetes, one for weight management), validated in May and June 2026; an EU approval would not necessarily mean an immediate launch while patent protection continues.
NZ New Zealand	Unconfirmed	We found no generic semaglutide in Medsafe's data sheet index or on the Pharmac Schedule as of 22 September 2026.
