Rybelsus in New Zealand

What is sold here

We found no evidence that Rybelsus is sold in New Zealand as of 22 September 2026. Medsafe's alphabetical index of data sheets has no Rybelsus entry (it does list Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity, Victoza and Saxenda), semaglutide is not on the Pharmac Pharmaceutical Schedule, a Bargain Chemist search for Rybelsus returned no products, and Life Pharmacy's Wegovy page says GLP-1 medicines are currently only available as injections, not pills. We could not query Medsafe's product consent database, so we cannot say whether Rybelsus has ever been given consent in New Zealand.

What it is licensed for

No New Zealand data sheet is published. Elsewhere, Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes in adults alongside diet and exercise; it is not approved for weight management.

Prescription rules

Semaglutide is a prescription medicine in New Zealand. Rybelsus, if it were supplied, would need a prescription from a New Zealand prescriber.

How to get a prescription

Rybelsus does not appear to be available in New Zealand, and no GLP-1 tablet is sold here as of 22 September 2026. If you have type 2 diabetes, talk to your GP: Pharmac funds dulaglutide (Trulicity) and liraglutide under its Schedule rules, while semaglutide is not funded.

For weight management, Wegovy and Mounjaro injections are available privately. You can get a prescription from your GP and fill it at any pharmacy, including online pharmacies such as Bargain Chemist, which require a New Zealand prescription before shipping. Some pharmacy chains, including Life Pharmacy and Unichem, run pharmacist-led consultations and can supply Wegovy under a standing order if you meet the criteria. Not every virtual GP service will start these medicines: Practice Plus, for example, says it cannot initiate weight-loss medications.

If you import a prescription medicine for personal use, Medsafe requires a prescription or letter from a New Zealand authorised prescriber and usually allows no more than three months' supply. Medsafe discourages importing medicines it has not approved.

Cost and cover

Pharmac (Pharmaceutical Schedule)

Pharmac does not fund any semaglutide medicine. A search of the Pharmaceutical Schedule (September 2026) finds no result for semaglutide or tirzepatide, while the older GLP-1 medicines dulaglutide (Trulicity) and liraglutide are listed. Pharmac says Wegovy and Mounjaro are not funded for weight loss: it has added Wegovy for chronic weight management in people with a high BMI and related conditions to its Options for Investment list after advice from its obesity treatment advisory group, it is seeking clinical advice on an application for Wegovy in people with heart conditions, and it is assessing an application for Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes, but it says it cannot say when, or if, they will be funded (page last updated 9 September 2026). Unfunded medicines are paid for in full, at a price set by the pharmacy.

Paying yourself

We found no New Zealand price for Rybelsus as of 22 September 2026, because we could not find it on sale. For comparison, Bargain Chemist's non-subsidised prices on that date were NZD 364.99 (0.25 mg) to NZD 469.99 (2.4 mg) per Wegovy pen and NZD 429.99 (2.5 mg) to NZD 874.99 (12.5 mg and 15 mg) per Mounjaro KwikPen, plus any consultation fee and a charge for refrigerated delivery.

Prices checked 22 September 2026. They change; the supplier's own site is the final word.

Checking a pharmacy is genuine

Medsafe licenses every pharmacy in New Zealand and publishes the Pharmacy Licence Register each month as a spreadsheet listing the company and the pharmacy's trading name and address. Check that the pharmacy you are buying from, including its online store, appears there. Then check the pharmacist on the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand's register; the Pharmacy Council regulates pharmacists, not premises. A legitimate New Zealand online pharmacy shows its street address and will ask for a New Zealand prescription (or, for some medicines, a pharmacist consultation) before supplying a prescription medicine.
