Rybelsus in France

What is sold here

Rybelsus is authorised EU-wide (3/7/14 mg and the newer 1.5/4/9 mg tablets) but is not marketed in France and does not appear in the French public medicines database.

How to get a prescription

Rybelsus is not sold in France, so French doctors prescribe other treatments for type 2 diabetes, often injectable semaglutide (Ozempic), which is reimbursed at 30% when used in specified combinations. If you move to France already taking Rybelsus, discuss switching with your doctor (medecin traitant) before you run out.

Since June 2025 any doctor can prescribe Wegovy or Mounjaro for weight management. Since 15 June 2026 they are reimbursed at 65% for adults with a BMI of 40 or more, or 35 or more with a weight-related condition, after well-conducted nutritional care has failed (less than 5% weight loss in six months); the first reimbursed prescription must come from a specialist such as an obesity centre, endocrinologist or bariatric surgeon, and any doctor can renew it. The Wegovy pill has EU authorisation but had not been launched in France as of September 2026.

Teleconsultations are legal and reimbursed like an in-person visit when they follow the coordinated care pathway. The prescription is sent to you and must be taken to a physical pharmacy, because French online pharmacies may only sell non-prescription medicines.

Prescriptions from doctors in other EU countries can be dispensed in French pharmacies if they contain the required details. UK prescriptions are no longer covered by these EU rules, so people moving from the UK should see a doctor in France.

Cost and cover

Assurance Maladie

Not reimbursed. In July 2021 the HAS transparency committee found Rybelsus's medical benefit insufficient (SMR insuffisant) and did not recommend reimbursement, and the product has not been marketed in France. Injectable semaglutide (Ozempic) is reimbursed at 30% for type 2 diabetes in specified combinations. Since 15 June 2026, Wegovy and Mounjaro injections are reimbursed at 65% for severe obesity under strict conditions.

Paying yourself

There is no French price because Rybelsus is not marketed in France. For comparison, Ozempic 1 mg costs EUR 77.60 per pen (four weekly doses) including the dispensing fee, and Wegovy pens cost EUR 146.91-195.10 before the dispensing fee.

Checking a pharmacy is genuine

French pharmacy websites that sell medicines must show the EU common logo (green stripes, a white cross and the French flag) on every page, with the text 'Cliquer pour verifier la legalite de ce site'. Clicking it should open the site's entry on the Ordre national des pharmaciens list, which you can also search yourself.

The logo only covers non-prescription medicines. Because selling prescription-only medicines online is prohibited in France, no legitimate website can sell you Rybelsus, Wegovy, Ozempic or Mounjaro for delivery; any site offering them is illegal, whatever logo it shows.

  Lilly's orforglipron is not authorised in the EU. EMA started evaluating it for obesity and type 2 diabetes on 22 January 2026 (EMEA/H/C/006632); the procedure restarted after the list of questions on 20 July 2026. It is approved in the US (April 2026) and the UK (August 2026).

  Weekly tirzepatide injection. Reimbursed at 65% since 15 June 2026 for severe obesity under the same conditions as Wegovy. Pen prices from EUR 176.10 (2.5 mg) to EUR 433.80 (15 mg) before the dispensing fee.

  No generic semaglutide is authorised in the EU. EMA is evaluating three generic applications: two for type 2 diabetes (evaluation started 21 May 2026 and 18 June 2026) and one for weight management (started 18 June 2026).
