Rybelsus in Ireland

What is sold here

These are the strengths authorised in the EU, and therefore in Ireland: the newer, better-absorbed 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg tablets (authorised August 2024, equivalent to the older 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg tablets), plus higher 25 mg and 50 mg tablets (authorised September 2024). Being authorised is not the same as being on sale, though: we could not find Rybelsus priced or stocked by any Irish pharmacy or online doctor service, it is not listed on medicines.ie (where Novo Nordisk publishes its Irish information for Ozempic and Wegovy), it is not on the HSE reimbursement list, and at least one Irish pharmacy states that it is not marketed in Ireland. If your doctor prescribes it, ask your pharmacist whether they can obtain it.

What it is licensed for

Type 2 diabetes in adults whose blood sugar is not controlled well enough, alongside diet and exercise: on its own when metformin is unsuitable, or with other diabetes medicines. It is not licensed for weight loss; the Wegovy tablet (oral semaglutide up to 25 mg) is the oral semaglutide authorised for weight management in the EU.

Prescription rules

Prescription-only medicine. You need a prescription from a doctor registered with the Medical Council (your GP, a hospital consultant or an Irish online doctor service), dispensed by a PSI-registered pharmacy.

How to get a prescription

If you have type 2 diabetes, start with your GP. Rybelsus is authorised in Ireland but we could not find it on sale here and it is not reimbursed by the HSE, so your GP is more likely to prescribe a reimbursed alternative such as Ozempic (the weekly semaglutide injection), which is free under the Long-Term Illness Scheme for people with diabetes and covered by the medical card and the Drugs Payment Scheme. If your doctor does want you to take oral semaglutide, ask a pharmacist whether it can be sourced.

Online doctor services run by doctors registered with the Medical Council can assess you remotely, usually with a questionnaire plus a video or photo check of your ID and weight. If they prescribe, the prescription is sent electronically (by Healthmail) to a pharmacy you choose. You then collect it, or some pharmacies deliver medicines they have dispensed for you. These services currently prescribe injectable GLP-1 medicines such as Wegovy and Mounjaro for weight management; the Wegovy pill has EU approval but has not launched in Ireland, and Foundayo is still under EU review.

Do not order prescription medicines from websites that post them to you from abroad or without a prescription: it is illegal to sell prescription medicines online in Ireland, and the HPRA warns that such products may be fake or unsafe. Check that the pharmacy is on the PSI register and that the doctor is on the Medical Council register.

Cost and cover

HSE (medical card, Drugs Payment Scheme, Long-Term Illness Scheme)

Rybelsus is not reimbursed by the HSE. The National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics assessed it in February 2021 and recommended that it should not be reimbursed unless its cost-effectiveness improved, and it does not appear on the HSE's July 2026 list of reimbursable diabetes medicines, where the only semaglutide product is Ozempic. So it is not covered by the medical card (GMS), the Drugs Payment Scheme or the Long-Term Illness Scheme, and anyone who obtained it would pay the full private price.

For reimbursable medicines the schemes work like this. Medical card holders pay a prescription charge of €1.50 per item, up to €15 a month per person or family (€1 per item, up to €10 a month, from age 70). Everyone else can register for the Drugs Payment Scheme, which caps what a person or family pays for approved prescribed medicines at €80 per calendar month. The Long-Term Illness Scheme, which has no means test, gives free approved medicines for diabetes mellitus, including Ozempic. Wegovy and Mounjaro are not reimbursed for weight management, and the NCPE's assessment of Wegovy is still in progress.

Paying yourself

We found no Irish pharmacy price for Rybelsus as of 22 September 2026, because no Irish pharmacy or online doctor service we checked stocks it. For comparison, Irish online pharmacies charge around €240 to €300 a month for Wegovy injections and from about €265 a month for Mounjaro, privately.

Checking a pharmacy is genuine

Every pharmacy in Ireland must be registered with the PSI as a retail pharmacy business. Find the pharmacy's PSI registration number on its website or in the shop, then use Find Pharmacy on the PSI register to check that the name, address and registration match.

Websites that sell non-prescription medicines must also be on the PSI's Internet Supply List and show the EU common logo on every page that sells medicines; clicking the logo should take you to the seller's entry on the PSI list, which you can also search yourself. The logo does not apply to prescription medicines such as Rybelsus, because these cannot legally be sold online in Ireland; a legitimate service will send your prescription to a registered pharmacy for dispensing. For an online doctor, check that the doctor is on the Medical Council's register of medical practitioners.

  Wegovy tablets (1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg) for weight management were added to the EU marketing authorisation for Wegovy by a European Commission decision dated 14 July 2026, after a positive CHMP opinion on 21 May 2026, so they are authorised in Ireland. As of 22 September 2026 Novo Nordisk had not announced an Irish launch date and we found no Irish pharmacy supplying them.

• Foundayo Tablet · orforglipron Under review

  Orforglipron (Foundayo in the UK and US) is not authorised in the EU. Eli Lilly's application (EMEA/H/C/006632, for obesity and type 2 diabetes) is on the EMA's September 2026 list of medicines under evaluation by the CHMP.

• Ozempic Injection · semaglutide (injection) Available

  Weekly semaglutide injection for type 2 diabetes. It is reimbursed by the HSE and appears on the July 2026 list of approved diabetes medicines, so it is free under the Long-Term Illness Scheme and covered by the medical card and the Drugs Payment Scheme when prescribed for type 2 diabetes.

• Wegovy Injection · semaglutide (injection) Available

  Weekly semaglutide injection for weight management, available privately on prescription (Irish online pharmacies list it from about €240 a month). It is not reimbursed: the NCPE's assessment for weight management was still in progress in September 2026.

• Mounjaro Injection · tirzepatide Available

  Weekly tirzepatide injection for type 2 diabetes and weight management, available privately on prescription (from about €265 a month at one Irish online pharmacy). It is not on the HSE reimbursement list; in February 2026 the NCPE recommended that it be considered for reimbursement for type 2 diabetes only if its cost-effectiveness can be improved.

  No generic semaglutide is authorised or sold in Ireland. The EMA's September 2026 list shows three generic semaglutide applications under evaluation (two for type 2 diabetes, one for weight management), validated in May and June 2026; an EU approval would not necessarily mean an immediate launch while patent protection continues.
