Rybelsus in the UK

What is sold here

The UK tablets are now 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg. They are a reformulated, better-absorbed round tablet that replaced the oval 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg tablets: 1.5 mg is equivalent to 3 mg, 4 mg to 7 mg and 9 mg to 14 mg. NHS prescribing of the new strengths started in November 2025 and by mid-2026 almost all NHS supply had switched; the eMC now lists the 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg tablets as discontinued. If you are switching, you need a prescription for the new strength, and the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service warns that people must be told about the change to avoid taking too high a dose. The 25 mg and 50 mg Rybelsus tablets authorised in the EU are not listed in the UK.

What it is licensed for

Type 2 diabetes in adults whose blood sugar is not controlled well enough, alongside diet and exercise: on its own when metformin is unsuitable, or with other diabetes medicines. It is not licensed for weight loss; the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide up to 25 mg) is the oral semaglutide licensed for weight management, although the GPhC notes that Rybelsus is sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss.

Prescription rules

Prescription-only medicine (POM). It can be prescribed on the NHS by your GP or diabetes team, or privately by a registered online doctor or pharmacist prescriber after a consultation.

How to get a prescription

If you have type 2 diabetes, the usual route is your GP practice or diabetes team. Rybelsus is one of several options they can prescribe on the NHS, depending on NICE guidance and your local formulary; NHS prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and in England people with diabetes on medication can apply for a free medical exemption certificate. If you already take the old 3 mg, 7 mg or 14 mg tablets, your prescription will be changed to the equivalent 1.5 mg, 4 mg or 9 mg tablet.

Privately, registered online pharmacies and online doctor services can prescribe after a consultation. You complete a medical questionnaire, usually verify your identity and, for weight-loss treatment, provide independent evidence of your weight and height (for example a video call, a photo check or information from your GP record); a UK doctor or pharmacist prescriber reviews it and the pharmacy then posts the medicine to you. Many services now focus on the Wegovy pill and Foundayo, which are licensed for weight management; fewer list Rybelsus, and when they do it is for type 2 diabetes or off-label for weight loss, which the prescriber must explain.

Before you order, check the pharmacy on the GPhC register, check who prescribes and whether they are registered with the CQC or its equivalent, and compare the total monthly cost including any consultation or delivery charges. Tell your GP about any medicine you get privately.

Cost and cover

NHS

Rybelsus is prescribed on the NHS for type 2 diabetes: NHS England data show around 50,000 Rybelsus prescription items a month in 2026. NICE's type 2 diabetes guideline (NG28, updated February 2026) recommends modified-release metformin plus an SGLT-2 inhibitor as first treatment for most adults. It recommends considering a GLP-1 receptor agonist (a class that includes semaglutide) for people diagnosed before the age of 40, and specifically injectable semaglutide (Ozempic) for people with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease; for most other people who need an extra medicine it now suggests a DPP-4 inhibitor first. Whether you are offered Rybelsus therefore depends on your situation and your local NHS formulary.

In England an NHS prescription costs £9.90 per item in 2026/27 (frozen for a second year), but people whose diabetes is treated with medication qualify for a free medical exemption certificate, so most people taking Rybelsus for diabetes pay nothing. NHS prescriptions are free for everyone in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Most people who take Rybelsus get it on the NHS. The NHS does not fund Rybelsus for weight loss, and the Wegovy pill and Foundayo are not yet available on the NHS, so people using oral GLP-1 medicines for weight loss pay privately.

Paying yourself

Most people who take Rybelsus in the UK get it on the NHS, where the list price is £120 for 30 tablets of any strength (up from £78.48 on 5 August 2026) and people with diabetes usually pay nothing for the prescription. Few private online services list Rybelsus, because they now concentrate on the Wegovy pill and Foundayo for weight loss. The private listings we found on 22 September 2026 were from £118.50 for 30 tablets at Dock Pharmacy (which dispenses private prescriptions you post to it) and £175 for 30 tablets through MedsForLess; Ashcroft Pharmacy listed it at £99.99 but it was out of stock. Consultation and delivery charges may be added.

For comparison, UK online pharmacies charge roughly £80 to £155 a month for the 1.5 mg starting dose of the Wegovy pill and £155 to £270 for the 25 mg dose, and roughly £85 to £155 for the 0.8 mg starting dose of Foundayo, rising to about £160 to £250 for the highest dose.

Checking a pharmacy is genuine

Find the pharmacy's GPhC registration number on its website (usually in the footer or the About us page; online doctor services should name the pharmacy that dispenses your medicine). Then search the GPhC pharmacy register by that number or by name and check that the name, owner and address match and that the status is Registered. Each register entry also shows whether inspection reports, conditions or enforcement history exist. The GPhC says its register is the only way to confirm a pharmacy is operating legally in Great Britain. For a pharmacy based in Northern Ireland, check the PSNI register instead.

For the prescribing side, an online doctor service in England should be registered with the CQC (you can search cqc.org.uk), in Scotland with Healthcare Improvement Scotland, in Wales with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales and in Northern Ireland with RQIA. Individual doctors are on the GMC register and pharmacist prescribers on the GPhC register. The MHRA also runs a service to check whether a website has been flagged as not recommended and to report suspicious sellers.

• Wegovy tablets (Wegovy pill) Tablet · semaglutide (oral) Available

  Oral semaglutide 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg for weight management, authorised by the MHRA on 11 June 2026 and sold privately by UK online pharmacies since the summer of 2026, typically from about £80 a month for the 1.5 mg starting dose to £155 to £270 for 25 mg, depending on the provider. Not available on the NHS; NICE has not published guidance.

• Foundayo Tablet · orforglipron Available

  Eli Lilly's orforglipron, a once-daily non-peptide GLP-1 tablet with no food or water restrictions, authorised by the MHRA on 10 August 2026 for weight management and type 2 diabetes (0.8 mg to 17.2 mg). UK pharmacies began supplying it privately in late August 2026, with some higher strengths initially on pre-order. Not available on the NHS; a NICE appraisal for weight management is in development with publication expected on 18 November 2026.

• Ozempic Injection · semaglutide (injection) Available

  Weekly semaglutide injection licensed for type 2 diabetes only (0.25 mg to 2 mg). NICE's 2026 update of NG28 specifically recommends it, at up to 1 mg a week, for people with type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The GPhC notes that it is sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss.

• Wegovy Injection · semaglutide (injection) Available

  Weekly semaglutide injection for weight management, including a 7.2 mg pen. Available on the NHS through specialist weight management services under NICE TA875 and widely sold privately by online pharmacies.

  Weekly tirzepatide injection licensed for type 2 diabetes and weight management. NICE TA1026 recommends it for weight management on the NHS with a phased roll-out, and it is widely sold privately.

  No generic semaglutide is authorised or sold in the UK; the eMC lists only Novo Nordisk's semaglutide products (Ozempic, Rybelsus and Wegovy). Unlicensed or 'research' semaglutide sold online is illegal and unsafe.
