Rybelsus in the Netherlands

What is sold here

Novo Nordisk BV now supplies only the 1.5/4/9 mg tablets in the Netherlands; the older 3/7/14 mg tablets still appear only as parallel imports. The doses are equivalent: 1.5 mg = 3 mg, 4 mg = 7 mg, 9 mg = 14 mg.

What it is licensed for

Type 2 diabetes in adults whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled, alongside diet and exercise: on its own when metformin is unsuitable, or with other diabetes medicines.

How to get a prescription

In the Netherlands type 2 diabetes is usually managed by your GP (huisarts) and practice nurse. If you meet the basic-insurance conditions, your GP can prescribe Rybelsus and it is reimbursed, with the cost counting toward your eigen risico. If you do not meet the conditions, a doctor can still prescribe it but you pay yourself.

Your prescription goes to the pharmacy you are registered with. Online pharmacies such as Thuisapotheek, e-apotheek (eFarma) and Boots Apotheek Online work with Dutch health insurers, receive prescriptions from your doctor and deliver free of charge. Check that a pharmacy is on the CIBG list before you register with it.

The Wegovy pill has EU authorisation but was not listed in the Dutch medicine price database (data to 1 September 2026), and at least one online service describes it as not yet available. Wegovy and Mounjaro injections for weight management are available privately but are not covered by basic insurance for that use. Online clinics that prescribe them must respect the Dutch rule against prescribing over the internet to people the doctor has never met or whose medication history is unknown, so expect to be asked for your GP details or medication history.

Prescriptions from doctors in other EU countries can be dispensed in Dutch pharmacies if they contain the required details. UK prescriptions are no longer covered by these EU rules, so expats arriving from the UK should register with a Dutch GP and get a new prescription.

Cost and cover

Basic health insurance (basisverzekering)

Rybelsus is in the basic package with conditions (GVS Bijlage 2). It is covered only for insured adults with type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 30 or more whose blood sugar is not controlled on metformin plus a sulfonylurea and who do not use insulin; as an add-on to metformin and basal insulin (BMI 30 or more) after more than three months of optimised insulin; or added to an SGLT2 inhibitor and metformin in people at very high cardiovascular risk (previous cardiovascular disease and/or chronic kidney damage). When the conditions are met it is fully reimbursed, but the cost counts toward your annual compulsory deductible (eigen risico). Otherwise you pay yourself.

Paying yourself

Medicijnkosten.nl (Zorginstituut Nederland, data to 1 September 2026) lists an average price of EUR 98.72-101.49 per 30 tablets for every strength (about EUR 3.29 per tablet), excluding the pharmacy's dispensing fees; 90-tablet packs of 7 mg are listed at about EUR 295-296. If you meet the insurance conditions, the cost is charged to your eigen risico instead of being paid in full at the pharmacy.

Checking a pharmacy is genuine

Dutch law requires every website that sells medicines to be on the CIBG list at aanbiedersmedicijnen.nl and to show the EU common logo (green stripes, a white cross and the Dutch flag). Click the logo: it must open that website's own entry on aanbiedersmedicijnen.nl, and the web address in the entry must match the site you are on. You can also search the list by company or website name.

The entry shows the highest category of medicines the provider may sell. Only providers in category UR (Uitsluitend Recept) may supply prescription-only medicines such as Rybelsus; UAD and AV providers are drugstores and shops for non-prescription products. Individual pharmacists and doctors can be checked in the BIG register.

  Lilly's orforglipron is not authorised in the EU. EMA started evaluating it for obesity and type 2 diabetes on 22 January 2026 (EMEA/H/C/006632); the procedure restarted after the list of questions on 20 July 2026. It is approved in the US (April 2026) and the UK (August 2026).

  Weekly semaglutide injection. Fully reimbursed for type 2 diabetes under the same GVS Bijlage 2 conditions as Rybelsus (cost counts toward the eigen risico); not covered for weight loss.

  Weekly semaglutide injection for weight management, including 7.2 mg. Not covered by basic insurance; average prices on medicijnkosten.nl range from about EUR 105.59 (0.25-1 mg pen) to EUR 233.77 (2.4 mg pen).

  Weekly tirzepatide injection. Partly reimbursed for type 2 diabetes under GVS Bijlage 2 conditions, so a personal contribution can apply; not covered for weight management.

  No generic semaglutide is authorised in the EU. EMA is evaluating three generic applications: two for type 2 diabetes (evaluation started 21 May 2026 and 18 June 2026) and one for weight management (started 18 June 2026).
