What is sold here

Both formulations are on AIFA's reimbursed list: the new 1.5/4/9 mg tablets and the older 3/7/14 mg tablets, which they are replacing. AIFA groups them as equivalent: 1.5 mg = 3 mg, 4 mg = 7 mg, 9 mg = 14 mg.

What it is licensed for

Type 2 diabetes in adults whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled, alongside diet and exercise: on its own when metformin is unsuitable, or with other diabetes medicines.

Prescription rules

Prescription-only (repeatable prescription, RR); no therapeutic plan is required, but SSN prescribing follows AIFA Note 100.

How to get a prescription

Your family doctor (medico di medicina generale) or a diabetologist can prescribe Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes on the SSN under AIFA Note 100. You collect it from any pharmacy (farmacia) and pay at most the regional prescription charge. A doctor can also prescribe it privately, in which case you pay the public price of about EUR 198 per 30 tablets.

Wegovy injections for weight management are class C (not reimbursed), so they are self-pay. The Wegovy pill is authorised across the EU but had not been launched in Italy as of September 2026. Law 149/2025 recognises obesity as a disease; check with your doctor whether any regional programme covers weight-loss treatment.

All prescription medicines must be collected from a physical pharmacy, because Italian websites may sell only non-prescription medicines.

Prescriptions from doctors in other EU countries can be dispensed in Italian pharmacies if they contain the required details. UK prescriptions are not covered by these EU rules, so people moving from the UK should register with the SSN or see a private doctor in Italy.

Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN)

Rybelsus is class A, so it is funded by the SSN for type 2 diabetes. Prescribing is governed by AIFA Note 100, which sets which adults with type 2 diabetes qualify for GLP-1 receptor agonists and which prescribing forms the doctor must complete. With an SSN prescription you pay at most the regional prescription charge (ticket), which varies by region and exemption status. Without an SSN prescription you pay the full public price.

Paying yourself

AIFA's class A list (30 April 2026) gives a public price of EUR 197.73 per 30 tablets for every Rybelsus strength; a parallel-imported 3 mg pack is listed at EUR 183.88. With an SSN prescription you pay only any regional ticket.

Where to get it

Prescription medicines cannot legally be sold online to the public in Italy, so we do not list online suppliers. Your doctor and local pharmacy are the route.

Not legal. Italian law bans distance sale to the public of medicines that require a prescription (Decreto Legislativo 219/2006, art. 112-quater). Pharmacies and parapharmacies may sell only non-prescription medicines online, on sites authorised by their region and listed by the Ministry of Health, and must show the EU common logo. Prescription medicines such as Rybelsus must be collected from a physical pharmacy.

Checking a pharmacy is genuine

Italian websites allowed to sell non-prescription medicines must show the EU common logo (green stripes, a white cross and the Italian flag), which links to their entry on the Ministry of Health list; you can also search the list yourself.

The logo only covers non-prescription medicines. Because distance sale of prescription-only medicines is banned in Italy, no legitimate website can sell you Rybelsus, Wegovy, Ozempic or Mounjaro for delivery; any site offering them is illegal, whatever logo it shows.

    Covered by the EU authorisation of July 2026, but the AIFA medicines database listed no Wegovy tablet pack and no Italian launch date had been announced on 22 September 2026.

    No generic semaglutide is authorised in the EU. EMA is evaluating three generic applications: two for type 2 diabetes (evaluation started 21 May 2026 and 18 June 2026) and one for weight management (started 18 June 2026).

Rybelsus in Italy: questions

Can I buy Rybelsus without a prescription in Italy?

No. Rybelsus is a prescription-only medicine. You need a prescription from a doctor, and only a pharmacy may dispense it. Websites offering it without a prescription are illegal.

Can I order Rybelsus or Wegovy online in Italy?

No. Italian law bans distance sale of prescription medicines to the public. Websites with the EU common logo may sell only non-prescription medicines, so you must collect Rybelsus from a pharmacy.

Is Rybelsus reimbursed in Italy?

Yes, for type 2 diabetes. It is class A, and SSN prescribing follows AIFA Note 100. You pay at most the regional prescription charge (ticket). Privately, the public price is EUR 197.73 per 30 tablets.

Can I use a UK prescription in Italy?

Generally no. Italy recognises prescriptions issued in other EU member states (Decreto Legislativo 38/2014), but since Brexit the UK is not covered, so a pharmacist is not obliged to dispense a UK prescription for a prescription-only medicine. Register with the SSN or see a private doctor in Italy, and bring your UK records and medication list.

Can I use a prescription from another EU country in Italy?

Yes. A prescription from a doctor in another EU country can be dispensed in Italian pharmacies if it shows the patient's full name and date of birth, the prescriber's details and signature, the date, and the medicine's name, strength, form, quantity and dosage. You pay the full price unless your own insurer reimburses you.

Is the Wegovy pill available in Italy?

Not yet. It has been authorised across the EU since July 2026, but no Italian pack was on the market and no launch date had been announced on 22 September 2026.

Are Wegovy or Mounjaro reimbursed for weight loss in Italy?

Wegovy is class C, so you pay in full. Mounjaro and Ozempic are class A only for type 2 diabetes under Note 100; we could not verify any national reimbursement for weight management.
