Buying Rybelsus online safely: fakes, red flags and pharmacy checks

Buying Rybelsus online is safe only when it comes from a licensed pharmacy that dispenses it against a valid prescription. Rybelsus is a prescription-only medicine¹⁴, and every country page on this site lists it that way, so a website that offers it without a prescription is not operating legally and you have no way of knowing what is in the pack. The FDA, the MHRA, the EMA and the WHO have all warned about fake semaglutide⁵⁷¹⁰¹¹. This guide covers those warnings, the red flags, how to check a pharmacy in the main regions, what genuine Rybelsus looks like and what to do if you think you have bought a fake.

Fake semaglutide: what regulators have found

• US: the FDA has warned about counterfeit Ozempic pens found in the legitimate US supply chain, covering lot NAR0074 (December 2023), lot PAR0362 (April 2025) and lot PAR1229 (December 2025)⁵. It also warns about unapproved GLP-1 products sold online, including products labelled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption"⁶.
• UK: falsified Ozempic pens in German-language packaging were found at two UK wholesalers in October 2023; none were known to have reached patients⁷. Later that month the MHRA said it had seized 369 fake Ozempic pens since January 2023, and that people had been admitted to hospital after using fake weight-loss pens, some of which may have contained insulin⁸. On 29 May 2026 it announced its largest-ever seizure of unlicensed weight-loss medicines, about 12,000 doses, with two arrests⁹.
• EU: the EMA alerted patients and healthcare professionals to falsified Ozempic pens reported at wholesalers in the EU and UK in October 2023¹⁰.
• Worldwide: WHO Medical Product Alert N2/2024 (19 June 2024) reported falsified Ozempic in Brazil, the UK and the US. The WHO says fakes may contain insulin or no active ingredient at all¹¹¹².

All of these alerts concern injection pens. We found no regulator alert specifically about fake Rybelsus tablets as of September 2026. That is not the same as saying fake tablets do not exist, and the checks below apply to tablets and pens alike.

Why "no prescription" sellers are illegal and dangerous

A prescription is a safety check, not a formality. The prescriber confirms that Rybelsus suits you and that none of its warnings apply, such as a history of pancreatitis, pregnancy or, in the US, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, and looks at which of your other medicines might interact¹². The pharmacist then checks the prescription and supplies a licensed product. The Rybelsus safety guide explains those warnings.

A seller that skips these steps is breaking the rules on prescription medicines in every country we cover. In Ireland, prescription medicines may not be sold online at all²¹; in the UAE, only licensed pharmaceutical establishments may sell them²². The FDA advises using only pharmacies that require a prescription, and warns that unapproved GLP-1 products sold online may not be what they claim⁶¹³.

Red flags of an unsafe online seller

• It offers Rybelsus without a prescription, or without any consultation with a prescriber¹³.
• Prices are far below what licensed pharmacies charge, or it advertises steep discounts¹³.
• The pack arrives in foreign-language packaging (the falsified pens found in the UK were in German-language packs)⁷¹³.
• There is no address or phone number in your country and no pharmacist you can speak to (the FDA's checklist for US buyers)¹³.
• The product is labelled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption"⁶.
• It sells "generic Rybelsus" or "generic semaglutide" in the US, UK or EU, where no generic semaglutide is approved⁶¹⁵. See generic Rybelsus.
• It offers a strength that is not licensed where you live, such as Rybelsus 25 mg or 50 mg outside the EU¹²³.

How to check an online pharmacy in your country

Wherever you live, a legitimate service will ask for a prescription or arrange a consultation with a licensed prescriber, name the pharmacy that dispenses your medicine, and have a pharmacist you can contact¹³. Then check that pharmacy on the official register yourself, rather than relying only on a badge or link on the seller's site.

What genuine Rybelsus looks like

• Tablets: white to light yellow, with the strength stamped on one side and "novo" on the other¹².
• Shape: the 1.5, 4 and 9 mg tablets are round (6.5 mm across in the EU and UK labels); the 3, 7 and 14 mg tablets are oval (7.5 x 13.5 mm in the EU label); the EU-only 25 mg and 50 mg tablets are smaller ovals (6.8 x 12 mm)¹²³.
• US packs: bottles of 30 tablets for every strength, and the label says to keep tablets in the original bottle¹. In the US the round 1.5, 4 and 9 mg tablets are sold as Ozempic tablets, not as Rybelsus¹.
• EU and UK packs: aluminium blister packs of 10, 30, 60, 90 or 100 tablets, although not every pack size is marketed²³.
• Strengths: the UK maximum is 9 mg and the US maximum is 14 mg of Rybelsus or 9 mg of Ozempic tablets, so a 25 mg or 50 mg Rybelsus pack is not a UK- or US-licensed product¹².

Checking the pack helps, but it is not proof: the counterfeit pens in the FDA and MHRA warnings were found in wholesale supply chains, not only online⁵⁷. If anything about the pack, the tablets or the seller seems wrong, ask a pharmacist.

What to do if you think you bought a fake

1. Do not use it. The FDA's advice about counterfeit semaglutide is not to use it⁵.
2. Keep the pack, any remaining tablets, the receipt and the seller's web address.
3. Speak to your pharmacist or prescriber about getting your medicine from a licensed source, and get medical help if you feel unwell after taking the product. Tell the doctor it may have been falsified.
4. Report it. In the UK, use the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme, which takes reports of suspected fakes as well as side effects¹⁸. In the US, use FDA MedWatch¹; Novo Nordisk's customer line (1-800-727-6500) can also be used to check suspicious Ozempic products⁵. Elsewhere, report to your national medicines regulator.
