Is there a generic Rybelsus? Oral semaglutide generics by country

Not in most of the world. As of September 2026 there is no generic Rybelsus in the US, UK or EU. Rybelsus's generic name is semaglutide, taken by mouth (oral semaglutide)¹, and Novo Nordisk lists the expiry of its semaglutide compound patent as 2031 in Europe and 2032 in the US¹³. The only generic semaglutide tablets on sale are in India, where the compound patent expired in March 2026 and Novo Nordisk is suing the makers over formulation patents²⁴⁵. Elsewhere, generic semaglutide means weekly injections that copy Ozempic or Wegovy, approved so far in India, Canada and Brazil³⁶¹².

What is the generic name for Rybelsus?

The active ingredient in Rybelsus is semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist: a medicine that copies the gut hormone GLP-1, which helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high¹. So the generic name is semaglutide, often written "oral semaglutide" to separate it from the injections. Novo Nordisk sells the same molecule under several brand names: Rybelsus tablets for type 2 diabetes, Ozempic injections, and Wegovy injections and tablets for weight management. In the US, the newer 1.5, 4 and 9 mg diabetes tablets are now sold as Ozempic tablets¹.

Rybelsus tablets also contain an absorption enhancer, salcaprozate sodium (SNAC), which helps semaglutide get into the body from the stomach¹. That matters for generics: the lawsuits in India concern patents on the SNAC formulation²⁴⁵, whereas the semaglutide compound patent there has already expired²³.

Generic semaglutide by country

This table summarises the position as of September 2026. Almost every generic is an injection; generic tablets exist only in India⁴¹⁵.

Generic oral semaglutide in India

India is the only country where a generic copy of the Rybelsus tablet is sold. Torrent launched generic oral semaglutide on 21 March 2026, describing itself as the first in India, and Dr. Reddy's launched 3, 7 and 14 mg tablets in May 2026, matching the original Rybelsus strengths⁴⁵. Novo Nordisk is suing both companies over patents on the SNAC formulation²⁴⁵.

Rybelsus itself is sold in India in the original 3, 7 and 14 mg strengths, so the generic tablets carry the same numbers. That does not make them interchangeable by default: whether a switch from Rybelsus to a generic tablet suits you is a question for your prescriber or pharmacist. The generics are prescription-only, like Rybelsus.

Why there is no generic Rybelsus in the US, UK or EU

A generic can be sold only once the patents protecting the original have expired or been overcome, and once a regulator has approved it. For semaglutide, Novo Nordisk's 2025 annual report gives compound patent expiry as 2031 in Europe and 2032 in the US, while the FDA's Orange Book lists the US compound patent until 5 December 2031¹³¹⁴. No generic semaglutide, tablet or injection, is approved in the US, UK or EU¹³¹⁵¹⁶. In the EU, three generic applications were under evaluation in September 2026; an approval would not necessarily mean a launch while patent protection continues¹⁸.

The US adds a naming twist. The newer 1.5, 4 and 9 mg tablets are now sold there as Ozempic tablets¹, so people also search for a "generic Ozempic pill". There is no generic of those either, because no generic semaglutide of any kind is approved in the US¹³¹⁵.

Being approved elsewhere does not make a generic legal to sell in your country. Products sold online in the US, UK or EU as "generic semaglutide" are not licensed generics¹⁵¹⁶. See buying Rybelsus safely.

Compounded semaglutide is not a generic

In the US, compounded semaglutide is made up by pharmacies rather than by a licensed manufacturer. It is not FDA-approved, so it is not a generic and has not been through the FDA's approval process¹⁵.

The FDA declared the semaglutide shortage over on 21 February 2025, and the grace periods for mass compounding of semaglutide ended on 22 April 2025 for state-licensed pharmacies (503A) and 22 May 2025 for outsourcing facilities (503B)¹⁷. The FDA also warns about unapproved GLP-1 products sold online, including products labelled "for research purposes" or "not for human consumption"¹⁵.

Quality can be an issue even for licensed generics. In August 2026 Health Canada published two recalls of Dr. Reddy's generic semaglutide injection, one for an incorrect pen package and one for an impurity outside specification¹⁰¹¹.

Is a generic injection a substitute for Rybelsus?

Not directly. Almost all generic semaglutide copies the Ozempic or Wegovy injections, not the Rybelsus tablet⁴¹⁵. Moving between tablets and injections is not a simple milligram swap: the EU label says the effect of switching between oral and injected semaglutide "cannot easily be predicted"²⁰, and the UK label says no tablet dose equivalent to the 1 mg weekly injection has been established²¹. Any change of medicine or route is a decision for your prescriber.

What to ask your prescriber or pharmacist

• Is any generic semaglutide licensed where I live, and is it a tablet or an injection?
• Would a different form of semaglutide suit me, and how would a switch be managed?
• Does my public health system or insurer cover my current medicine, and would it cover a generic?
• If I am offered "generic Rybelsus" online, is it a licensed product, and is the pharmacy registered?
